What to wear for your maternity photoshoot in Jacksonville (studio edition)

Pregnancy is already a whirlwind. Trying to figure out what to wear for your maternity photos on top of everything else can feel… like a lot. The good news? You don’t need a closet full of new outfits or model experience to look amazing on camera. With a few simple choices—and a little guidance—you’ll feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself during your studio maternity session here in Jacksonville, FL.

At Carolennys Studios, we specialize in fine art studio maternity photography. That means professional lighting, flattering posing, and access to a curated client closet, so you don’t have to overthink every detail. This guide will walk you through what to wear (and what to skip) for your maternity photoshoot in our studio.

Before you even think about specific dresses, start with a simple color palette. Two or three main colors is plenty.

  • Neutrals like ivory, cream, beige, tan, gray, and soft brown are always timeless.
  • Soft pastels (blush, dusty rose, sage, soft blue) add a gentle, romantic feel.
  • Deeper tones (emerald, burgundy, navy, rust) create a dramatic, fine-art look.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want my images to feel light and airy or bold and dramatic?
  • Where will I display these photos—are they going in a neutral living room, a colorful nursery, or a hallway gallery wall?

Trusting the vision of Carolennys Studios

For most maternity sessions, a dress or gown is the easiest and most flattering option. In our Jacksonville studio we have a full client closet (free to use during your session), but if you’re bringing your own outfits, look for:

1. Fitted around the bump

Dresses that are fitted under the bust or around the belly really show off your pregnancy. Look for:

  • Stretchy knit fabrics
  • Wrap dresses
  • Empire-waist styles

Avoid anything so loose that it hides your shape completely—especially if you’re early in the third trimester.

2. Flowing skirts for movement

A dress with a soft, flowing skirt photographs beautifully when you twirl, walk, or gently swish the fabric. We often use movement to create that dreamy, fine-art look.

Great options:

  • Chiffon or tulle skirts
  • Dresses with a slit to show a bit of leg (if you’re comfortable)
  • Off-the-shoulder gowns for a romantic feel

3. Simple, solid colors

Patterns can work in small doses, but solid colors are much easier to style and retouch. They also keep the focus on your face and your belly—not your clothes.

If you love prints, choose:

  • Very subtle florals
  • Small, soft patterns in neutral tones

Coordinating your family is less about matching and more about harmonizing.

Partners

Ask your partner to choose outfits that:

  • Stay within your chosen color palette
  • Are simple and classic (no big logos or loud graphics)
  • Fit well—neither baggy nor skin-tight

Options that always work:

  • Neutral chinos or dark jeans + a solid button-down or henley
  • A simple dress in a coordinating color
  • Barefoot in the studio for a relaxed, cozy feel

Siblings

For little ones, comfort comes first. If they’re itchy or restricted, we’ll see it in their faces.

Ideas:

  • Soft knits, leggings, or simple dresses
  • Solid colors that pull from your palette
  • Barefoot or simple socks (no bright cartoon characters)

💡 Pro tip: Lay everyone’s outfits on the bed together. If one item jumps out loudly, swap it for something softer.

There are no strict rules, but a few things are harder to photograph in a fine-art studio style:

  • Loud logos or big text – they draw attention away from your faces.
  • Neon or super bright colors – can cast color onto your skin and clash with backdrops.
  • Tiny, high-contrast patterns (like tiny stripes) – can create a strange “wavy” effect on camera.
  • Clothes that are too tight or too loose – if you’re constantly adjusting, you won’t feel relaxed.

If you’re unsure about any piece, send us a quick photo of your options—we’re happy to help you decide before your session.

You do not need to change who you are for your photos. But a little prep can help you feel more polished and confident.

  • Hair: Style it the way you’d wear it to a nice dinner—down in soft waves, a low bun, or whatever feels most “you.”
  • Makeup: Aim for slightly more than your everyday look so your features stand out under studio lights. Think even skin tone, defined lashes, and a touch of color on the cheeks and lips.
  • Hands & feet: If your hands will rest on your belly (they will!) and we’re doing barefoot shots, a quick manicure/pedicure or trimmed, clean nails make a difference.
  • Undergarments: Choose seamless, skin-tone pieces and strapless or convertible bras if you’re wearing off-the-shoulder gowns.

Most importantly, hydrate and rest the day before. Drinking water and getting as much sleep as you can helps your skin and eyes look fresh.

Use this to keep things easy:

  • Choose 1–4 outfits (depending on package size) you love.
  • Pick a simple color palette for your family.
  • Set out undergarments and accessories the night before.
  • Pack a small bag with water, snacks, and any personal items.
  • Screenshot or save any inspiration images you want to share.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember: you don’t have to figure this out alone. During your maternity session at Carolennys Studios, we’ll help you choose outfits, guide every pose, and create a comfortable experience from start to finish.
